USA Yoga Competitions: How Yoga Asana Championships Work

USA Yoga Competitions: How Yoga Asana Championships Work

Quick answer

USA Yoga runs the national yoga asana competitions in the United States. Athletes perform a 3 minute routine of 6 postures, one each from backbends, forward compressions, tractions, twists, lifts and inversions, scored out of 10 by a judging panel. You qualify for Nationals at a regional or virtual qualifier. The 2026 Nationals were held July 31 to August 2 in State College, Pennsylvania, and the World Championship is December 4 to 6, 2026 in Italy.

Yes, yoga is a sport too. Every year, athletes from age 9 to over 65 step onto a stage, bow to the judges and perform three minutes of the hardest postures they can hold in perfect stillness. U of Yoga founder Jessica Bernstein competed in the 2024 USA Yoga competition season, and this guide explains exactly how it works, from the rules to how to enter your first event.

What Is Competitive Yoga?

Competitive yoga, also called yoga asana sport, turns the physical postures of hatha yoga into a judged performance. It looks a bit like gymnastics in slow motion: there is no jumping or tumbling, only controlled entries, long holds and smooth transitions. Many competitors come from the hot 26 and 2 tradition, and athletes from Ashtanga, Iyengar and other styles compete too.

Where Did Yoga Competitions Come From?

Asana demonstrations and contests have a long history in India, especially in the physical culture schools of Bishnu Ghosh in Kolkata. In the United States, Rajashree Choudhury, a former all India yoga champion from the Ghosh lineage, started organized adult competitions in 2003 through the International Yoga Sports Federation, and in 2009 founded the nonprofit United States Yoga Federation, known as USA Yoga. Youth competitions followed.

Internationally, yogasana is now recognized as a competitive sport in India, and the IYSF World Championship draws teams from dozens of countries. The idea still divides the yoga world, and the documentary Posture follows both competitors and critics.

How Does a USA Yoga Routine Work?

Each athlete has 3 minutes to perform 6 postures and return to standing. One posture must come from each of six groups:

  1. Backbends, such as Standing Bow, Full Camel or Full Wheel.
  2. Forward compressions, such as Standing Separate Leg Stretching or Rabbit variations.
  3. Tractions, deep stretches like splits (Hanumanasana) or Standing Head to Knee.
  4. Twists, such as Spine Twist or full Lotus twists.
  5. Lifts, arm balances like Crow, Peacock or Tiger.
  6. Inversions, such as Headstand, Handstand or Scorpion.

Across the routine, the athlete must show balance, flexibility and strength, each at least twice. Postures are chosen from the current USA Yoga posture guidelines, which list approved poses and their difficulty.

How Is a Yoga Competition Scored?

  • Each posture starts at 10 and judges deduct for technique faults.
  • Stillness counts. Hold 5 seconds for full credit. 4 seconds costs 0.5, 3 seconds costs 1 and under 3 seconds scores zero.
  • Skill bonuses and penalties of 0.5 to 2 points reward harder variations or penalize easier ones.
  • Second chances are allowed but cap that posture at 5 points.
  • Penalties: 1 point for each missing posture group or characteristic, 1 point per posture out of sequence (up to 3) and 1 point for facing the wrong way.
  • Judging panels have 3, 5 or 7 certified judges plus a time judge at qualifiers and Nationals.

What Are the USA Yoga Age Divisions?

Group Divisions

How Do You Start Competing in Yoga?

  1. Build a daily practice. Most competitors practice 5 to 6 days a week. A hot 26 and 2 class is a common foundation.
  2. Find a coach. Many hot yoga studios have teachers who coach competitors. Use our Yoga Studio Finder to find one.
  3. Read the rules. Download the current rules and posture guidelines from usayoga.org.
  4. Build your routine. Pick one posture from each group that you can hold still for 5 seconds, then practice the full 3 minute routine on a timer.
  5. Enter a qualifier. Regional and virtual qualifiers run each season. Virtual qualifiers let you submit a video from home.
  6. Dress for the judges. Rules ask for modest, form fitting attire that shows your alignment, such as a leotard or fitted shorts and top.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a yoga competition?

A yoga asana competition is a sport event where athletes perform a 3 minute routine of 6 postures in front of judges. Each posture is scored on technique, stillness and difficulty. In the US, these events are run by USA Yoga, the national federation.

How do you qualify for USA Yoga Nationals?

You must compete in a USA Yoga qualifier, either a regional event or a virtual qualifier, during the season. Top finishers in each age and gender division earn a place at the National Yoga Asana Championship.

How is a yoga competition scored?

Judges score each of the 6 postures out of 10, then add or subtract for extra or less skill. Postures must be held still for at least 3 seconds to score and 5 seconds for full marks. Missing a required posture group, going out of sequence or facing the wrong way costs points.

What are the age divisions in USA Yoga?

Youth divisions are 9 to 11, 12 to 14 and 15 to 17. Adult divisions are 18 to 34, 35 to 49, 50 to 64 and 65 plus. Each is split into men and women, and age is based on your age on September 1.

Isn’t competitive yoga a contradiction?

Some teachers think so, because yoga traditionally discourages comparison. Competitors usually see it differently: a routine is a moving meditation that demands years of discipline, and the event inspires people to start practicing.

Where is the 2026 World Yoga Championship?

The 17th IYSF World Yogasana Championship is scheduled for December 4 to 6, 2026 in Italy. Top US finishers can be invited to represent Team USA.
